With light at the end of the lockdown tunnel at last, the Beinn an Tuirc team have had a look back on the weirdest 3 months of our lives, compared notes on how we’ve all coped and bragged shamelessly about any achievements, big or small.
I have enjoyed getting the walled garden ready for production and progressing that. I have also watched re-runs of the old Dukes of Hazzard series and was relieved to see that the original Boss Hogg is a lot fatter and uglier than me. I’ve really enjoyed Ozark on Netflix although not when Mrs Hogg whines in my ear that it’s too violent and nasty.
My beard enjoyed a resurgence although my mother-in-law told me I looked scary. Frankly I count that as a win.
Mrs Hogg (Emma!)
Schitt’s Creek and wild swimming have been my lockdown happy drugs. Schitt’s Creek is a hilarious Netflix series, bursting with heart and soul. Moira Rose is my spirit animal!
Any other plans and intentions quickly fell by the wayside – I haven’t brushed up on my piano skills, I haven’t sorted the pan cupboard and my children are not fluent in French. (Neither am I so I’m not even sure why this was a goal…). It’s best not to dwell on how homeschooling has been. A wise person once said, “it takes a village to raise a child and a distillery to home school one.” Truth.
I have remained suitably insane throughout which is entirely normal. I would mention wild swimming but someone else owns that franchise… I have managed to fill an empty greenhouse with tomatoes, cucumbers (which were ridiculed by Boss Hogg) courgettes (some of which have been donated to the walled garden) peppers and chillies. I have also mastered the art of cooking live shellfish as foreign markets have closed and we have been enjoying fresh lobsters, crab and prawns delivered to our doors.
Watching Netflix, Rotten provided many hours of entertainment (highly recommend). DIY home improvements kept me busy with jobs I had put off for months and starting my wee indoor garden. Up to 10 plants included a Venus flytrap! Also attempting to reduce my food waste so trying different recipes including eating banana skins.
I’ve been keeping sane in lockdown by exploring all of the walks and paths in the area, doing running challenges, short yoga sessions and lots of dog walks!
Most days I’ve been channeling Mary Berry! Think I’ve got the banana loaf down.
Well frankly I’m surprised you have included me as I seem to have been made redundant from the team. I almost NEVER visit the distillery anymore and can’t even remember the last time I played ‘Where’s Su?’. It’s not good enough. I’ve been stuck at home being subjected to all the shouting and screaming that accompanies something that’s called fockinghoamskooling or something like that. Sounds Swedish. Have no idea what they are up to but everyone seems to hate it. Covid-19 doesn’t even affect dogs. Raging.
